Oral Cancer Screening

According to the American Cancer Society, over 54,000 cases of oral and oropharyngeal cancers are diagnosed each year, with over 11,230 of these cases resulting in death. Fortunately, oral cancer can be diagnosed with an annual cancer exam provided by Dr. Oakley or your general dentist. When cancer is recognized early it can treated more effectively.

Early stage oral cancer is typically painless and symptom-free, making it hard to recognize without an exam. The most common form of malignant oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which is commonly found in the lips, tongue, and palate. However, oral cancer can be found in many other places throughout the mouth, including: the tonsils, throat, salivary glands, gums, and face.

What happens when I get an oral cancer exam?

The oral cancer examination is painless. Dr. Oakley will look and feel for abnormalities in the mouth, head and neck. Some of the signs that will be investigated are lumps, bumps, discolored patches and sores. Sores that do not heal are especially concerning. These can be indicative of cancerous changes. If a concerning lesion is present, Dr. Oakley will implement a treatment plan that is right for you. A biopsy may be indicated to make a diagnosis. Treatment options vary according to the diagnosis, these may include: surgical excision, radiation therapy, and/or chemotherapy. You will be referred to the appropriate Medical Doctor for definitive treatment.

Over 75% of oral cancers are linked with avoidable behaviors like tobacco use and drinking alcohol. The risk of these cancers in people who drink and smoke heavily is about 30 times higher than the risk in people who don’t smoke or drink. Dr. Oakley can provide you with literature and action plans to help you quit. Empower yourself! You can quit detrimental behaviors such as these and improve your overall health and quality of life.
